The Backstory.
George "Coach G" Johnson played the game at the highest level he was handed — and outworked the rest. Three years at Gannon University delivered a regional and conference championship. A senior year at Augusta State delivered an NCAA Division II All-American selection and 109 made threes in 30 games.
Thirteen years later, he's still on the floor. Elevate Prep Academy in Delray Beach was the first stop — where he coached future Baylor commit Tyson Jolly, future Ole Miss starter Dante Fitzpatrick-Dorsey, and a generation of 4-star and 5-star recruits. Today he runs Coach G Development out of the DMV.
The roster of athletes who've trained with him reads like a tournament bracket. Rasir Bolton at Iowa State and Gonzaga. Tyrese Martin at UConn and the 76ers. Jonny O'Bryant in the NBA. Earl Clark, formerly of the Lakers, still on his program a decade in.
The work happens at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes and Gunston Middle School — gyms in Alexandria and Arlington where Coach G also serves as Assistant High School and Head Girls Coach, respectively. By day, he's a Health and PE teacher in Arlington Public Schools. The discipline he demands at training he models in front of a classroom every morning.
